In March, individual health care
providers were acknowledged for their significant contribution to
women’s health. Women in Newfoundland and Labrador are being
diagnosed with an almost entirely preventable disease.
In conjunction with International Women’s
Day, the Cervical Screening Initiatives Program has initiated a process
to say “Thank You,” on behalf of women in the province, to all health
care providers who are partnering with them to improve the health status
of women.
Through the participation of ongoing
office campaigns, continuous prompting on the importance of Pap testing
and increased access to service, women in the province are encouraged to
take better care of themselves.
“In recognition of their significant
contribution to screening women for cervical cancer, service providers
who have screened 200 or more women in their practice during 2009 will
receive a certificate of achievement,” said Lori Harnett, provincial
women’s educator with the cervical screening coordinating office.
Every year between 30 and 35 women in
Newfoundland and Labrador are diagnosed with invasive cervical cancer
and another several 100 with severe precancerous changes. These
statistics, coupled with the ever-growing trend towards incidence in a
much younger population, only strengthens the commitment of the program
to bring all partners together to eradicate this preventable disease.
